About this Museum
Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) is one of Mumbai’s most important museums and a landmark cultural institution in the historic Kala Ghoda district. Formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum, it was established in 1922 and houses an extensive collection representing India’s art, archaeology, history and cultural heritage. The museum is set within an impressive Indo-Saracenic architectural masterpiece, surrounded by landscaped gardens. Inside, visitors can explore a vast collection of Indian sculptures, miniature paintings, decorative arts, archaeological artefacts, textiles, coins, manuscripts and other historical objects spanning centuries of Indian civilisation. CSMVS also presents temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, workshops, lectures and cultural events, providing visitors with opportunities to engage with both India's historical heritage and contemporary art and culture. Its location makes it an ideal cultural stop alongside other Kala Ghoda attractions, including Jehangir Art Gallery, National Gallery of Modern Art and nearby heritage landmarks
